hAPpy AnNiVerSarY!!!

september 13, 1997...the day i got married...wow. it has been 13 years already!! i cant believe how time flies...oh, doug vruggink...what a time it has been...so glad God brought us together!

i think when a person marries, they have NO CLUE how much that "partner" is truly a partner...when i think back on all the growing we have done together...the things we've learned...trial & error...hospital visits...babies being born...getting priorities straight...the crying..
the "talks"...the road trips...the big stories - some true, some, not so much...the LAUGHS...oh my - the laughing :)

and it all started with a call during monday night football - half time of course - "hi, this is doug vruggink, wanna go out?"....."ummmm, is this really doug?"...."uh, yeah."...."then, YES!"
(thats the SHORT version...i can give you the LOOOONG version over coffee some time:))

so, we were married outdoors, at spring grove park....look at that couple...look at that fluffy dress and even fluffier hair...oh. my.

this must have been a very serious part of the ceremony....er, something. i remember wanting to get this part over with, cuz i felt like everyone was looking at me. cuz, well...they were.

here we are ready to get the party started...notice i counteracted all the "fluff" with my nikes.

this cracks me up. we went to gatlinburg for our honeymoon...this was at the dixie land stampede...a dinner show...where, evidently we had to get a picture in front of a fake covered wagon...do you appreciate all the denim? no, dougs hat is not part of the get-up...its the real thing, baby.

here we are...just us. love this man.

we look so natural, dont we?! ha! 2 of the best things to come out of our marriage are our two little men...so amazing...we are so blessed...healthy beautiful boys....LoVe!!!!

happy anniversary, doug! i still thank God every day for bringing us together...and in a day where marriages are considered "an option" or "temporary"...i'm glad we both love & trust God enough to give Him our marriage every day...here's to many more years together...

love you always & forever - rach

m.i.a.

oh, for the love of pete....how have i been so busy!? i hate that i haven't blogged since february...REALLY????!!!!

well, it isn't for lack of material...there have been plenty of happenings in the vruggink household...and since august is upon us, i DO need the extra therapy of journaling my life...

i've already warned doug that it IS august, ya know.

he says, "sooooo...."

i say, "SO! i am working 3 of the last 4 weekends of summer, at a job i dont love, giving me less time to soak up summer....(yes, i have a job :(....more on that later) AND summer is my favorite time of the year...i did not get enough beach time (i never do), AND the kids will both be going to school, including my dodger, all day, all week....(i am one of those moms that would just as soon keep them home) AND you are home, not working and if i let myself think about it too much, i could just cry!" (yes, my self-employed hubby tore his achilles tendon clean through, requiring surgery and 10 weeks off work....more on that later too!)

not to worry...august is always hard for me....giving up the freedom of summer, sand, camping, berry picking, sleeping in, staying up late, tanned faces, ice cream runs, late nights snuggling on the couch watching baseball with the kiddos, smelling fresh cut grass, pool parties, the warmest lake michigan has been in years, no schedule....

heres to soaking up those fleeting days of summer....and i'll be playing a little catch-up on our summer, too :)

i love God!

today i had my first mammogram. i found a lump a few weeks ago...and one thing led to another. so today, i found myself spending most of my day at the lemmen-holton cancer pavillion downtown.

i should back up. when i first found it...i thought, i'll keep an eye on it...hoping it would just go away maybe :) when my sister-in-law's sister called me about dawson's rash, because her son had a rash....and what does it look like, etc....we somehow came upon the subject of lumps, breasts and mammograms....i know, makes perfect sense...anyhooooooo....she sternly said, "you need to call your doctor, and get that checked out. so, i did.

so....i wanted to share some cool things about how COOL God is...

1. i found a lump. girlfriend calls - whom i totally admire - and gives me the nudge i need to get it checked out. (thanks, shel :))

2. mary anne (the best midwife in the world) sees me...wants me to see a "certain" doctor. however, this "certain" doctor cant see me for another month. so we set up an appt. with her #2 choice...another mary anne :) (turns out the "certain" doctor may not have the best bedside manner...funny, but i knew as soon as i couldn't get in with dr. poor bedside manner, that was God saying it would be best to go with dr. mary anne)

3. doug is going to be home the day of my appointment (he is able get kids on the bus...and it turns out, off the bus, too...because i was gone ALL day for the testing)

4. i am amazingly calm...i have my bible study group praying for me...and a few good friends & family too

4 1/2. two of my aunts, whom i e-mailed, sent me messages about their experience with their lumps...and told me they would be praying for me today, too...(thanks, aunties :))

5. this morning, i simply prayed that i would feel His presence all day long...that He would just be with me...and the results would be good. then, i wanted to take a verse with me...i open the Bible, and this is what i turned to: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10...awesome!

6. as i'm backing out of the garage, i'm really wishing i could find the praise & worship cd that kirk had burned for me a long time ago...i haven't been able to find it for months...i tore the house up looking for it just this past sunday...i looked in the van,too...anyway, i pull out a cd case to look ONE more time...i unzip it, and the cd FALLS INTO MY LAP. i smiled. God knew how VERY frustrated i was when i couldn't find it sunday...but if i had found it...i wouldn't have that awesome reminder of his love...i love music, and they were exactly the songs i needed to hear today :)

7. as i am walking into this building (which is phenomenal, by the way) i think, "how in the world am i going to find where i gotta go?"...this girls sees my confused expression...i explain...a worker says, i'm going there too, just follow me.

8. every person i come in contact with is incredible. seriously.

9. as i'm getting the mammogram, i notice the walls. they are my very favorite color in the whole wide world. pale aqua-blue. (i've posted about this color before...the color of my bedroom when i was a baby...its everywhere in my house...it reminds me of all things happy & calm)

10. as i'm sitting in the room with a nurse going over needle-biopsy procedure, my mary anne calls - while i'm in the doctors office (seriously, so not normal, i wish you could have seen the expression on the nurses & secretaries face)...she wants to make sure i'm ok, that i'm not feeling rushed or uneasy, and if i have any questions...she is the most amazing woman...she loves her job, and loves her "girls" as she affectionately calls us :)

11. they were able to do the biopsy today, too...which wasn't the original plan...but somehow the radiologist just "happened" to have an opening at 1:45....

12. small side note: i have been praying ultra-hard about what direction God wants me to take...especially regarding career, and maybe going back to school...in case you didn't know, i originally went to GVSU for nursing, but didn't get in the program....i actually prayed that God would give me the right nurse to talk to ...and if i felt led, i would question her about her job, etc. well, holy cow, he gave me a couple awesome nurses...one who had a daughter the same age as me...this nurse went back to school when her youngest was in kindergarten (hmmm...) and she was scared to death, but she made it, and couldn't be happier. we had a really long conversation. (i'm thinking maybe God isn't listening to the part when i say, "God, i'll do whatever you want me to do, as long as i don't have to go back to school")

i'm sure i could think of more things, but i just smile when i think of these few things....God let me know that He was with me all day long. no, i dont have the results yet, but i'm not scared. i know there is a reason for everything...and i may not always choose His ways, i know i never walk alone...so thanks, God, for all those little reminders, the people you put in my path at just the right time...You are awesome.

wanted to get some christmas pics up for all my devoted readers! seriously, even though most of you are family...or like family, we get so busy this time of year, we don't even get to each others houses to see all the decorations....so, i've got a very small sample of my holiday cheer for you!

my favorite little chair...it was my neighbor's high-chair when she was a little girl...love it!

even cuter with present, dont ya think?!

totally not the best lighting, but i totally have the wrong camera to take good pics...anyway, i DO love how cozy lamplight is. the "W-I-S-H" word was a little thanksgiving day project we did years ago at the poelman's...

my antique store trees with my best friends, george & mary bailey....please tell me you know who they are...you dont? oh. my. stars. go rent the movie, "its a wonderful life". after you put your kids (or dogs) to bed, get in your pj's, grab a blanket, some hot cocoa, and a box of kleenex. the best movie of all times!!!!!!!! have you not noticed the name of my blog?
the bailey's are family...at least it looks like it, cuz i have their picture plastered everywhere. love them, i seriosly considered how i could somehow name my kids after a part of the movie....just think, little george vruggink.

1946....i love everything about this movie...the story...the values...good overcomes evil...the clothes...the homes...especially how they decorated! no pottery barns or crate & barrel! homes reflected the personalities of the people who lived there!

this pencil sketch was a present from my mom last christmas....isn't she good?! i always loved this picture...agian from the movie....she drew it by pushing "pause" on the dvd player and drew it...LOVE IT. it makes me happy every time a look at it. it hangs proud on my wall year round.

i love books. i love christmas books even more! court gave me the idea to read a christmas book every day of december with my kids. so i've collected a pretty nice stack...good ol' scholastic book orders, used book sales and amazon.com have made this a pretty inexpensive tradition...my favorite book? the gift of the maji, by o'henry....my mom read it to us as kids, and now my kids love it as much as me! i also have it on tape (dubbed off an album of my grandparents)...it is lorne green narrating the story...awesome.

if you haven't read it, put it on your list of things to do before christmas :)

the reason for the season...i love my nativity...if i could witness anything in the bible, it would be the birth of Jesus...oh, to hear the angels singing...i get goose bumps thinking about it. another tradition...reading luke 2

love christmas ornaments...

this is an old ornament from my mom...
"every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings"

(this will make no sense to you if you haven't watched the movie...)

my tree, which we got from behind my grandma & grandpa beld's...complete with icicles....

well...i mentioned a few of our traditions...what are yours?

post some pics of your trees, too! it will be like our own little bloggy-holiday tour!
